Albion agree with plans for the summer transfer window to close for Premier League clubs before the start of next season.

But chief executive Paul Barber has warned the Premier League’s ‘big six’ could be at a disadvantage unless the rest of Europe follows suit.

The current window does not shut until August 31, with the season already 19 days old.

Advancing the deadline to before the start of next season was discussed at the summer meeting of Premier League chairmen and chief executives.

Barber told The Argus: “Everyone agrees with it. The practicalities of making it happen are more difficult.

“From my discussions, the majority of clubs would like to see the window closed before the season starts, because it then means squads are settled and managers are happy going into the season.

“But, unless the rest of Europe comes into line, it potentially puts some of our clubs at a disadvantage.”

The big six are understood to have reservations, as rival European powers would have longer to trade if the decision is taken unilaterally.

The plan will be voted on when Premier League clubs reconvene on September 7. At least 14 need to be in favour to push it through.
