A HEALTH and Safety inspector, a software developer who has survived cancer and a banker are among those hoping to rise to the occasion in Channel 4’s Great British Bake Off.

And among the contestants is Julia, 21, from West Sussex.

Originally from Kemerovo, Siberia, she said she has spent three years honing her baking prowess so she could enter Bake Off.

She met her husband Matt while on holiday in Turkey as a 17-year-old.

But as is tradition with the Bake Off press team, there is little other detail about Julia from West Sussex.

So if you know her, or have indeed tried one of her cakes, then get in touch.

The popular baking series returns to air with its new broadcaster on August 29 at 8pm, following much controversy since news of its departure from the BBC was confirmed last year.

Among the other bakers are Kate, 29, from Merseyside, who is a health and safety inspector.

IT programme manager Peter, 52, from Essex will also enter the tent along with Flo, 71, from Merseyside, who is said to be the oldest contestant to appear on Bake Off to date.

Also taking part this year is cancer survivor, Chris, 50, from Bristol.

The software developer said he is passionate about helping other people whose lives have been affected by cancer.

Judge Paul Hollywood has insisted that viewers will not notice any difference with The Great British Bake Off “within 10 minutes” of the first episode of the new series.

He said: “I’ve seen the first programme, you’ll not know the difference within 10 minutes.

“The first thing I said was ‘Bake Off’s back’ as soon as I watched it.

“Because actually, when you start to see the bakers getting into the challenges, and the music comes in and the tent’s there, you realise actually that’s what Bake Off is.”

New presenter comedian Noel Fielding said: “We’re all just there to help the process and the format, so we’re not trying to sabotage the format or subvert anything.”

Hollywood likened Bake Off to a factory, in that “if you change the staff, the machinery still works”.

He said: “We do Comic Relief, we did that for five years with different presenters every week - it’s the same thing, it’s still Bake Off.

“Is that Bake Off or not? Of course it is.”

Bake Off is on Tuesday at 8pm.
