FAMILIES have gathered today to remember their loved ones killed in the Shoreham Airshow disaster.

Friends, relatives and members of the public affected by the crash made the pilgrimage to the Old Shoreham Tollbridge to reflect on the events of August 22, 2015.

There was no formal event planned to mark the second anniversary like last year but a number of private gatherings took place around the time the crash took place.

A two minutes silence was held at the Tollbridge.

A remembrance service was also held at in a Shoreham church earlier.

At the Church of the Good Shepherd, the congregation remembered the 11 victims with prayers and lit candles.

Tonight Worthing United FC players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect to their two former team mates Matthew Grimstone and Jacob Schilt.

Along with the team of Horsham Y.M.C.A, a minute's silence will be held before the game.

A permanent tribute and memorial walk to honour the lives of the 11 men is planned along the banks of the River Adur.

The £180,000 project is still in progress and is expected to be completed next year but relies on the completion of a flood defence scheme.

The money has been donated by businesses and public bodies.

Adur District Council commissioned husband and wife team David Parfitt and Jane Fordham to create the memorial which will centre around an archway of 11 strands to reflect each of the victims.

There will also be a seating area, sculpture and poem.

Councillor Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s executive member for environment, said: “While it cannot bring those people back, we hope it will provide a place of contemplation and calm along the banks of the river.”

The archive of hundreds of tributes, flowers, letters, cards and other mementoes, left on the old Shoreham Tollbridge in the weeks following the crash is still available for the public to view at westsussexpast.org.uk/searchonline

Visitors can see how the items have been preserved at the record office in Chichester.
