A MAIN city centre road will be closed for months.

The busy North Street in the heart of Brighton will shut down on Monday for major resurfacing works.

The closure of the road could see large-scale disruption to commuters.

But hopefully you will avoid the chaos with our guide to the roadworks.

When will North Street close?

Traffic in North Street will be shut for eight weeks from Monday September 18.

The closure will run from the Clock Tower down to just before the East Street roundabout.

How will this affect my commute?

Nearly 100 buses an hour run through North Street to other parts of the city.

Diversion plans have been released by Brighton and Hove Buses that will see buses travelling through West Street and down coast road, before picking up their normal route in Old Steine.

Westbound traffic will do the same in reverse.

How will I know to pick up my bus from the right stop?

Suspension notices will be displayed on North Street bus stops and the real-time information boards will point customers to their nearest stops.

Brighton and Hove Buses staff will be be on hand at the firm’s Churchill Square information point to help as well as sporadically at North Street.

Visit www.southernwater.co.uk/northstreet for information on diversions to Brighton and Hove, Stagecoach and The Big Lemon services.

During which hours will the works take place?

Working hours are from 8am to 6pm, seven days a week. Southern Water said they hope to get the work completed as quickly as they can, but are mindful of the residents as well as businesses in the street.

They will be starting slightly earlier on the mornings of Monday and Tuesday, September 18 and 19 in order to safely set out the diversions before peak traffic hours.

Why are the roadworks happening now?

Southern Water is repairing damage caused by the replacement of Victorian water mains ten years ago.

The areas were originally excavated in 2007 when they replaced around 400 metres of ageing Victorian water mains.

Are there any other road closures I should be worried about?

The North Street closure coincides with work at the Lewes Road, Elm Grove and Union Road junction for three months.
