A MAN has been taken to hospital after being hit by a police car on the seafront.
There are huge tailbacks along King's Road, Brighton, with the road closed from the Sea Life roundabout to the Jury's Inn hotel.
A 59-year-old man was hit by a police car responding to a 999 call.
The car has a dent in the bonnet and a smashed windscreen.
The man was seen lying in the road before being placed in an ambulance.
He has been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, with a shoulder injury.
A force spokeswoman said he was not in a life threatening condition.
She added: "We are appealing for witnesses after a police car was involved in a collision with a pedestrian in Brighton.
"Officers were responding to an emergency call when their car collided with a man in Kings Road, at 6.05pm.
"The 59-year-old man has been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, with a shoulder injury. The road is currently closed from West Street in both directions while investigations are carried out.
"Following the collision, the force has referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
"If you witnessed the collision or have any information please contact police online or ring 101 quoting Operation Cornhill."
