ARE you on the property hunt but want something a little different to the usual two up two down?

Well this could be the property for you.

Historic Patcham Mill, which has stood on the outskirts of Brighton for more than 130 years, is up for sale.

But don’t worry, you wont be required to grind any corn – Patcham Mill is now a luxury home.

Situated in Mill Road, Brighton, it was originally named Waterhall Mill back in 1885, when it was completed for baker Joseph Harris.

At the time, it had the most up-to-date machinery available for windmill operators.

Mr Harris also owned the nearby Preston Mill, which was demolished in 1890.

But the Patcham Mill continued to run, milling corn until 1924. It was owned by the Harris family throughout its operational life after which it fell into a state of disrepair.

Wind power had fallen out of favour in the 1920s and the Harris family sold the mill.

During the Second World War, it was owned by a Mrs Alice Easter, and became a lookout post for the Home Guard. Members of the Dad’s Army used to scan the horizon for invading Germans.

In the 1960s it was given Grade II listed status and was deemed as being of special architectural and historic importance.

It was then converted into a private home, complete with a modern extension and swimming pool.

However, the original machinery was kept on display with spiral staircases replacing the original ladders.

The floors were replaced to create four rooms and a high brick wall to provide privacy in the garden.

In 1972 the property was extended with an entrance hall and a two-storey wing to complement the original mill.

In 1990, when owned by art collectors Mr and Mrs Musgrave, the mill was hit by gales and later a lightning strike, leading to considerable damage.

The couple spent more than £170,000 restoring the structure and they built a conservatory and new kitchen.

Its sale offers a rare opportunity for someone to own a piece of Brighton and Hove history, which is oozing character.
