Bomb disposal experts were called to a police station after a member of the public walked in off the street with a suspicious object.
The Royal Logistic Corps bomb disposal team were called to the police station in Chapel Road, Worthing.
A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "A man brought in a World War Two switch detonator to Worthing Police Station just before 6.10pm on Monday.
"The man said he had found it under Worthing Pier while digging for fishing weights.
"The front office of the station in Chatsworth Road was closed as a precaution and the EOD were called as it believed the device was live.
"The bomb disposal unit arrived at the scene at 9.05pm and took the detonator away."
