Chris Hughton was the victorious manager last time Arsenal lost at home to a promoted team in the league.

That was almost seven years ago, when Newcastle nicked a 1-0 success at the Emirates in November 2010.

The current Albion boss masterminded a super win to take Newcastle fifth in the Premier League – exactly one month before he was sacked.

Tim Krul was part of it too, notably with a fine save from Samir Nasri.

Arsenal have played 19 home league matches against promoted teams since then, winning 17 and drawing two.

So Hughton’s return with a club fresh out of the Championship is a great omen for superstitious Seagulls fans.

At the same time, a look at the detail from that Toon success will also offer a reminder of how much he might miss one man who will certainly not be there on Sunday, in Tomer Hemed, and another who seems unlikely to be, Glenn Murray.

Hughton’s masterplan with Newcastle, a week after enjoying a 5-1 win over neighbours Sunderland, revolved around his use of two centre-forwards. And that is something Albion do not have right now.

He played Andy Carroll on his own up front and asked Shola Ameobi to operate out of position, helping pack midfield.

Ameobi also had to get forward and support Carroll when possible.

The only goal came from a set-piece, which is not a bad avenue for Albion to explore.

Lukasz Fabianski failed to hold Joey Barton’s free-kick and Carroll nodded home right on half-time.

Albion might also require the sort of luck Newcastle enjoyed when both Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott hit the bar.

But Hughton has shown he can come up with a tactical plan against an Arsene Wenger side.

The Argus:

Just as he did, to a degree, last time the two bosses met as a poor Albion team managed to run Arsenal pretty close in the FA Cup before losing 3-2 at the Amex.

Speaking after that 1-0 win, Hughton said: “We rode our luck a little bit and a needed a couple of good saves, particularly one, from Tim.

“What we needed was a spirited performance by the 11 players on the park and that is what we got.

“You have got to be resolute, you have got to defend as a team.

“You know they are going to have the lion’s share of possession and that is against anyone because of the way they play and the players they have got. To keep a clean sheet here is outstanding.”

Laurent Koscielny was sent off just before the end.

Arsenal had just come back from a midweek trip to Donetsk and were possibly a bit jaded.

Wenger said his side were never allowed to get into their flow.

Newcastle were not the only promoted team to win at the Emirates that season. West Brom had enjoyed a 3-2 victory six weeks previously.

But, since that defeat by Hughton’s men, the Gunners have only dropped points to promoted teams twice at the Emirates.

They drew 3-3 with Norwich at the end of the 2011-12 season, by which time the Canaries had had time to adjust to elite company. Middlesbrough forced a 0-0 stalemate early last season.
