A RESTAURANT voted the most sustainable in the country has been recognised for its charitable work.

Lucky Beach, in King’s Road, Brighton, was voted the most sustainable in the Delicious Magazine awards (formerly BBC Good Food) last month.

The restaurant is focused on supporting the areas where they source their food from, and this month staff contributed a day’s pay towards building a medical centre in a village in Rwanda, where they they get their coffee beans.

One hundred per cent of takings from the day were also donated to the cause, with about £6,000 raised for the centre.

The fundraiser mirrored an event the restaurant ran last year when Lucky Beach raised £8,000 to build a school in the same village.

It was for this fundraising effort the restaurants scooped the national accolade voted for by the public.

Manager Flora McTeare said: “It is great to get involved and help build the medical centre too. Obviously giving up your day’s wages is a really big thing to do, but the staff were more than happy to do it and be a part of the project.”

She added that the fundraiser will become an annual event at the restaurant.

Lucky Beach is the sister restaurant of Red Roaster cafe in St James’s Street, Brighton.

Chefs only uses fish certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council.

Speaking about winning the Delicious Magazine award, Ms McTeare said: “We weren’t expecting it at all, so it was a nice surprise to win the award.

“Obviously the people of Brighton and Hove must like us, and we are really grateful to them for their support.”
