A MOTHER who set up a charity after the death of her daughter has been named Inspirational Woman of the Year.

Alex Eades from Brighton was overwhelmed when she discovered she had won during a ceremony in London on Monday.

The competition was run by the Lorraine show on ITV. Mrs Eades appeared on live TV on Monday and yesterday to talk about her experience.

Mrs Eades’ daughter, Charlotte, died in 2016 from a brain tumour called glioblastoma.

She created a YouTube channel on which she posted regular updates on her progress and offered advice and tips about living with cancer.

Her inspirational, and sometimes funny, vlogs attracted interest around the world.

Since Charlotte’s death, Mrs Eades and her son Miles have kept the vlog going.

Last October the family created the charity Charlotte’s Battle Against Glioblastoma (BAG) to raise funds for research into the cancer and help other people learn more about it.

Mrs Eades was nominated for the award by her friend and charity chairwoman Cressy Brooks.

She said: “I was totally overwhelmed by the whole event, we met so many wonderful, kind people.

“To have the chance to tell Charlotte’s story in such a public way was very difficult for me personally.

“However, it was a huge opportunity to build awareness about glioblastoma as well as help drive more donations for Charlotte’s BAG research.

“We take nothing out of every pound we raise. We pay our own expenses, have no salaries, overheads or advertising.

“Ever single penny in every single pound goes into research by Charlotte’s consultant Stergios Zacharoulis at King’s College Hospital, London.

“We are the only organisation funding this research, and we are determined to beat glioblastoma in Charlotte’s name.

“I would like to thank everyone who voted for me, and also to thank my son Miles and Cressy.

“It’s all still sinking in.”

The lunchtime ceremony took place in the presence of the Duchess of Cornwall.

The Lorraine award was the first to be presented.

In a Facebook post Mrs Brook said: “Alex spoke so beautifully about Charlotte and the work of Charlotte’s BAG.

“She got a standing ovation and there really was not a dry eye in the house.”

The charity says it is already starting to feel the benefits of the win and the exposure.

It has had about 20,000 extra views of Charlotte’s channel and donations have already been pouring in.
