AN actress has been tipped as a Hollywood star of the future.

Sophie Reid, 26, from Brighton, is one of 16 actors and film- makers to be chosen as Screen International’s Stars of Tomorrow.

Now in its 14th year, the annual talent showcase draws attention to up-and-coming writers, actors, directors and producers from the UK and Ireland who are primed to make their mark in the industry in the years to come.

Sophie has already starred in big name films and television shows, including HBO’s Game of Thrones and this year’s live action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast.

This autumn sees the release of Barracuda, an independent thriller in which she stars as the female lead, Sinaloa, who arrives in Texas to meet her half-sister and stake a claim to her family’s music legacy.

A musician herself, the role allowed Sophie to showcase her talents in both music and acting – and was crucial in her being selected as one of Screen International’s Stars of Tomorrow.

She said: “It’s astounding because when I heard the breakdown for Barracuda, I felt this tingle – I needed the part.

“But the process of getting the job took a year, and there was a point where we thought it might fall through.

“When I got the call about Stars of Tomorrow something in me just relaxed.

“I believed in the project so much, it’s like the whole year has led up to this moment.”

Stars of Tomorrow editor Fionnuala Halligan curates the line-up after considering hundreds of candidates and consulting with industry experts on the list, including casting directors, talent agents, producers and directors.

Sophie was the first to be selected for the showcase, following a visit by Ms Halligan to the South by South West Festival in Austin, Texas, where La Barracuda was first screened.

Screen International has demonstrated a strong track record in identifying rising talent, with previous Stars of Tomorrow including Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and Carey Mulligan.

It is the third year of Screen International’s partnership with the BFI London Film Festival to launch the initiative, which sees the 2017 stars presented as part of its programme of events.

It includes an industry dinner this evening attended by filmmakers, producers, casting directors and the stars themselves.

Ms Halligan said: “I’m particularly thrilled this year to announce a strong, diverse list of stars.

“These are lively, opinionated actors and film-makers who are ready and waiting to show the world what they are made of.”
