THREE men are due to appear in crown court charged with participating in a prison mutiny and an arrest warrant has been issued for another man facing the same charge.

Specialist officers were called in to control a riot at HMP Lewes after prisoners “went on the rampage” for six hours on October 29 last year.

Ross Macpherson, 28, currently of HM Prison Belmarsh, Shane Simpson, 29, of Arundel Road, Totton, Southampton and David Carlin, 25, of Reeves Road, Normanton, Derby are all due to appear at Lewes Crown Court on November 16 for their plea hearing.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Steven Goodwin, 28, of Fairlight Road, Hastings, with no offer of bail, after he failed to attend a hearing at Brighton Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Two other former prisoners allegedly involved in the mutiny have had their cases adjourned.

John Udy, 38, of Leominster Road, Portsmouth, had his hearing adjourned to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on October 26.

Benjamin Drury, 32, of Cambridge Road, Bristol, had his hearing adjourned to appear on the same date as Udy charged with a linked offence of criminal damage.
