HMV returned to Brighton in style this week as customers flooded the shop to check out the new-look store.

The music chain re-opened in Churchill Square shopping centre on Wednesday after its old store, also in the centre, closed in January.

Yesterday, The Argus visited the store to see what has changed and asked customers what they think of the new store and new location.

HMV takes over the basement level of the former BHS store.

It has a modern look to it – and it is a much bigger space than what they had previously.

With vinyl making a resurgence in recent years, the retail giant has opted to dedicate a whole section to vintage lovers.

Shoppers can also choose from a range of turntables from manufacturers such as Crosley, which offers slightly cheaper options of £79.99 and £99.99. Jam, which offers more premium quality equitment. has turntables priced at £249.99.

A HMV staff member said the amount of record players they have already sold, despite only opening on Wednesday, is “incredible”.

Prior to the January closure of the previous store, the shop had been trading in Brighton since 1970, and bosses have said they consider the city a “very important” location.

Last December, a shop worker told The Argus the old store was closing because the rent had been increased coinciding with the company recording huge losses of £8.8 million.

Customer Andy Carr was a regular at the former store and said it is good news they have found a new home.

The 32-year-old, a film teacher from Burgess Hill, said: “I am really happy it’s back.

“This store is much bigger than the old one and feels fresher.

“There is also a lot of variety.

“As a film teacher, I like to see the amount of movies on offer and it is very impressive.”

With a huge number of people buying their music online nowadays, stores have suffered greatly at the hands of the Apple’s iTunes and Spotify.

But Mr Carr echoed the thoughts of many music lovers. He said: “There is nothing like owning your own CD.

“That’s what I love about HMV – you can physically have it unlike online. And I think other people like that too.”

He added: “I think the store will be successful, if they can keep the prices competitive enough.”
