CHRISTMAS elves at Brighton and Hove Buses have been hard at work decorating the Santa Bus to hit the city’s streets in the run up to the festive season.

Staff are preparing to spread some festive joy across the city to raise money once again for The Argus Appeal and The Martlets Hospice in Hove.

The Santa Bus will be visiting several areas across the city over 18 dates, running from tomorrow until December 18.

Martin Harris, Brighton and Hove Buses managing director, said: “It is great to be working with the lovely people at The Argus and The Martlets again so that our Santa Bus can spread Christmas cheer around the city and as you can see our brilliant technicians have done a great job in getting the bus into fine festive fettle.

“It is set to be another great Christmas on the Brighton and Hove Santa Bus.”

Volunteers will dress up as elves to join Santa on a colourful and brightly lit bus, playing Christmas songs as it tours the city to raise money for the two charities.

The Santa Bus was launched in 2004, after The Argus Appeal decided its grotto should be mobile.

The initiative took off after the appeal received backing from former Brighton and Hove Buses managing director Roger French.

Since its first run, the Santa Bus has been able to cover more ground and reach more of the city’s residents each year.

The scheme would not be possible without Brighton and Hove Buses providing the bus driver, fuel and volunteers needed to keep the wheels rolling.

Elsa Gillio, The Argus Appeal co-ordinator, said: “With the Santa Bus now in its 14th year, we once again look forward to a brilliant festive fundraiser in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

“It would not be possible without the help of Brighton and Hove Buses, our close working relationship with The Martlets and the support of Lloyds Banking Group and Legal and General.

“This year the bus will be stopping in Southwick for the first time.

“Last year a record- breaking amount was raised.

“We thank everyone for their continued support.”

The Santa Bus will depart from the company’s depot in Hove at 5pm and then travel to each day’s start point.

The bus usually operates from around 5.30pm until about 8.30pm each day.
