THE county's busiest road was closed over fears a man could jump from a footbridge on to the carriageway.
The Sussex Police 999 control room received a report that a man had been seen on the wrong side of railings on a footbridge over the A27 between the Southwick Tunnel and the Hangleton interchange.
The road was closed in both directions at 6.50am this morning as a precaution.
But once officers who went to the scene found no-one there or nearby.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: "A search of the area continued but the A27 was re-opened at 7.40am.
"We know there was considerable traffic congestion as a result of the closure and we thank drivers for their patience while this report was being checked out."
