AN ADULT television channel is offering pensioners cheap access following news that plans for free wi-fi were stopped over porn fears.

The Argus revealed on Tuesday how those living in residential homes would not get free access to the internet because they might look at “inappropriate” websites.

There were then suggestion that the plan for Brighton and Hove City Council to give free wi-fi was abandoned due to fears that those residents would use it to watch pornography.

Now pay-per-view channel Television X sent out a message saying old age pensioners would be offered two days’ access for £1.

On Twitter they said: “We respect our OAPs, so we’re offering them 48hrs access to #TelevisionX on Freeview for just a quid! Let them know.

Councillor Anne Meadows, chairwoman of the housing committee which made the decision on wi-fi, said there were complexities around wi-fi installation.

She said: “There are some particular challenges on security, and the council’s liability, when providing access in a communal setting - not least in terms of people accessing illegal or inappropriate material.”

After the decision to abandon the free wi-fi plan Mike Bojczuk, who is a volunteer for IT company Digital Brighton, said the council was trying to put in place far greater security measures than were necessary.

In a question to last week’s housing committee meeting at Hove Town Hall, Mr Bojczuk said: “Will council agree to provide wi-fi access to common area lounges of their senior housing schemes? Providing broadband to 25 schemes isn’t greatly expensive and if provided by the council, it could be used in many ways to add to and improve communication and services to senior residents.”

He said buses, libraries and housing association care homes all had public wi-fi, but no council-run homes had it. He sid installing it would help mitigate against “digital exclusion.”
