PLANS for 136 new flats – including 20 for local families – go on public display on Friday.

Jules Stevenson, whose family are originally from Bolney, is developing the former Howard Kent site next to Kingston Wharf in Shoreham and Southwick.

Proposals include a cafe and extensive coastal walkway as well as the homes.

Twenty flats will be reserved and offered first to residents and workers in the Adur area.

Mr Stevenson said: “We have already consulted widely to assess what the local community needs with respect to housing and community facilities.

“The meeting on Friday forms a part of our ongoing consultation with the public.

“We believe that we are helping address the policies of the Adur Local Plan with regard to the regeneration of the wharf and ensuring the public has a scheme which is beautiful, sustainable and a point of destination for all age groups.

“I am very excited to have purchased this site in order to build something special for local people to enjoy and delighted that architect Liam Russell and a number of other local firms will be involved in its construction.”

He said his team had already spoken to residents and organisations about their preferences for the scheme as well as the council about helping to address some strategic needs.

The development will comprise three main elements, or “fragments”, with a total of 136 flats facing the port’s entrance.

Each fragment is joined by landscaped podium gardens with roof gardens giving views to the Isle of Wight, the South Downs and Brighton and Hove.

Community facilities will include a flexible working space which could include a doctor’s consultation area if required and a shared bike hire facility for all residents.

It is hoped the landmark development will attract many first-time buyers as more than 50 per cent of the apartments are priced below the new stamp duty threshold of £300,000.

The development will also offer apartments for sale through the Help to Buy scheme.

The pricing strategy will encourage young, local families and professionals to get on the housing ladder.

The meeting takes place on Friday in Room 3 at the Adur Civic Centre in Pond Road and starts at 6pm.
