WAS Tina Turner ‘simply the best’ when she appeared at the Brighton Centre in 1985.

Were you there?

If you were then this is one of the photographs from the Argus archive that you will be free to view at Brighton Racecourse this weekend.

Today and tomorrow from 10am to 5pm you can look at images of a host of stars in amongst our collection of thousands of pictures from 1960 to 1992.

The concert was held on March 11. Tina started with the Prince song Let’s Pretend We’re Married.

She went on to sing some classics including River Deep, Mountain High, What’s Love Got to Do With It, Nutbush City Limits and Private Dancer

She also played Help! by The Beatles and, of course, Proud Mary which was originally written by the band Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Among the other famous faces will be sporting stars like Steve Ovett, captured here in the Brighton schools under 15s 400 metres race.

The runner’s gold medal in the 800 metres at the 1980 Moscow Games was rated one of the most iconic moments in the history of the Olympics.

Steve unveiled a statue of himself on Brighton seafront five years ago and was honoured by being made a freeman of the city.

Mr Ovett was born in Brighton and now lives in Australia.

You will find pictures of other sports stars like Julie Hemsley.

Julie played for Brighton and Hove Albion Women’s FC for 18 years and then became coach and manager. She represented the English National team as a player and as assistant manager and coach.

There will be thousands of pictures like these on show at the racecourse and parking is free.

The pictures have been put in alphabetical order by Andy Garth and his team from Brighton and Hove Stuff

Argus editor Arron Hendy said: “When we moved back to the city centre a year ago it was fantastic that Andy and his team wee able to take on our archive and store it so that generations to come can see them. It is great fun simply to browse and people can buy the images they love when they find loved ones, friends and celebrities.”
