LIFE in the Premier League just keeps getting sweeter for Albion.

The club scooped more than £1 million in profit at the Amex last Saturday, despite their 5-1 humbling at the hands of Liverpool, for the first time in Seagulls’ history.

A record crowd of 30,634 contributed to the takings, with gate receipts at an all-time high.

It was also the highest-yet catering spend per head across the ground, with bars, kiosks and lounges playing their part in the success.

Staff at the Amex stadium also entertained a record number of diners before the Liverpool match in the exclusive 1901 Club.

Albion chief executive Paul Barber said: “While we were all left disappointed by the result on the pitch it was a consolation to review the business performance on Monday morning.

“Our teams worked incredibly hard to get ready for the Liverpool match, on the back of the midweek match here, and then our catering and hospitality team also turned around the 1901 Club ready for that evening’s Christmas parties in the various 1901 Club lounges.”

Albion currently sit 12th in the Premier League, with a seven-point cushion over the relegation zone.

They are highest placed out of the three promoted sides, and went on a five-match unbeaten streak – only falling short to giants Manchester United and Liverpool either side of their 0-0 draw at home to rivals Crystal Palace.

There was some disorder at the Liverpool match, though, as two fans were arrested following on from trouble at the Crystal Palace game.

A 15-year-old Liverpool fan was released under investigation for possession of a flare, while Albion supporter James Mott, 37, from Bexhill, was charged with throwing a missile on to the pitch.

Last month Albion announced their best-ever sales week at the club megastore, which is inside the Amex, eclipsing their takings for any single week.

They saw a staggering profit climb of more than 500 per cent in shirt sales, with the Seagulls’ version of Black Friday – dubbed Blue Friday – also taking more than 50 per cent above the year before.

Mr Barber said: “Our club merchandise sales have continued to soar.

“We have now sold more than 3,000 replica shirts since they went back on sale on the morning of our match with Stoke City and our final supply of home shirts will now go on sale for Christmas.

“Our fans have been absolutely fantastic in making this season’s shirt the most popular and biggest selling shirt in the club’s history.

“It’s hugely encouraging to see these results.

“And it goes to underline just how positive an impact Premier League football is having on the club – not to mention the city of Brighton and Hove, where we know that, in addition to our own business growth, hotels, restaurants and bars are benefitting from bigger crowds and more visitors from outside the city.”
