GRAFFITI was daubed over the new Volk’s Railway sheds on the same night vandals went on a crime spree.

The sheds at the site on Brighton seafront are part of the £1.65 million redevelopment of the railway.

The vandals splashed paint across the doors.

They sprayed the letters CWC across a shutter in blue and yellow paint, with a large red outlining around it.

Black tags, which appear to say “Kofier”, were also scrawled on the side of the buildings at the site of the world’s oldest electric railway.

The damage was reported to have happened overnight between Monday and Tuesday last week, the same time multiple buildings in Steine Street were coated in silver paint.

Criminals left a trail of destruction along the seafront, through Steine Street and on buildings in St James’s Street.

A man was caught on CCTV defacing Bar Broadway in Steine Street. He was accompanied by a woman, as reported in The Argus last Friday. They are yet to be caught.

The paint on the side of the railway’s sheds has since been cleared but police have issued an appeal for information about the offence.

Volk’s Railway’s £1.65 million redevelopment work began in autumn last year, and was made up of money from Brighton and Hove City Council, a Heritage Lottery Fund grant and Volk’s Electric Railway Association.

The historic track, stretching a mile across the seafront, was built by Magnus Volk in 1883 and re-opened for business in October. It is a heritage railway.

On December 8, PC Daryl Holter, Sussex Police’s heritage crime officer, tweeted pictures of the damage along with the criteria of the crime, which stated: “Heritage crime is any offence which damages or harms the value of England’s heritage.”

He is also working to “raise the profile of heritage crime” throughout the county via a Facebook page called On Your Doorstep, where people can receive updates on the crimes.

The force are now seeking witnesses to come forward.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: “Police received a report of graffiti being daubed on the shutters of the Volk’s Electric Railway in Madeira Drive, Brighton.

“The graffiti tags appeared sometime overnight between December 4 and 5.
