SUSSEX'S only motorway was hit with traffic chaos as it was closed all weekend.

The northbound is shut between junction 10 at Crawley and junction 9 at Gatwick .

The closure will be in place all weekend and for next three weekend for resurfacing by Highways England, from 10pm on Friday to 4am Monday.

To add to travellers woes no trains are currently running between Three Bridges and Brighton or Lewes because of engineering works.

Further works on the M23 are being planned for March. Members of the public have until Monday to comment on proposals to convert the road into a so-called smart motorway.

Work will see the road upgraded to four lanes in each direction, by converting the hard shoulder.

But it will mean more disruption during the work including some night time closures.
