A BMW burst into flames as its owners drove onto the A23.

Dozens of people called West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service when they spotted the red car burning in a layby tonight.

Two men had to escape from the car when it caught fire as they pulled onto the northbound carriageway between Pyecombe and Muddleswood at the Henfield turn-off.

Emergency services were called at 7.38pm. Sussex Police shut the left-hand lane while firefighters from Brighton and Keymer put out the flames.

The fire was out by 8.09pm. The car was completely destroyed.
