A SPATE of vandalism has left six cars with smashed windows.

In Whitehawk, Brighton, earlier this month four cars had their windscreens smashed in a road residents say has become a parking nightmare.

And on Saturday, the windows of two cars were seen being smashed by a vandal near the greyhound track in Hove.

NHS workers at Brighton General have taken to parking in nearby Manor Hill, following the introduction of a controlled parking scheme in Hanover. Manor Hill has no restrictions.

Residents said it has turned the steep hill into a rat-run.

In early January, resident John Kerwin noticed four cars had been vandalised in a similar way, although police said they had no report of this logged.

Mr Kerwin said: “It was one or two weeks ago, it all happened the same night.

“There are three still there, I walk past them every day. I think the fourth has been moved.

“Some of these cars are there all day every day, all four were at one time.

“To be honest I think it’s people coming down the hill at night, when they’ve been drinking, a lot of the wing mirrors have been broken off too.

“We’ve asked for CCTV repeatedly, we asked the council for a speed camera before the last election.

“You still get people on the wrong side of the road at 70mph because of all the parked cars. It’s not safe.

“Last year I saw four accidents in a week at the top of the hill.”

One NHS worker told The Argus he had taken to parking elsewhere since the crimewave.

On Saturday night, near Coral Brighton and Hove Greyhound Stadium in Nevill Road, Hove, protesters calling for the closure of the track had their car window smashed.

Campaign Against Brighton and Hove Greyhound Stadium activists were leaving the stadium in a car together following the protest, when a rock was thrown at the window.

The driver of the car, protest group member Sarah Whitehead, from Hove, said: “The whole window was smashed and my female passenger was really shaken.

“We are just angry that they could do this in a public place and get away with it.”

Sussex Police confirmed a rock then damaged a parked car nearby, with protesters saying it smashed a window.

A police spokeswoman said the suspect in the most recent incident was a man about 6ft tall who was wearing a dark jacket and a woolly hat.

Any witnesses are asked to call police on 101.
