ALBION fan and television broadcaster Peter Brackley has vowed to give up live performances after falling unconscious for a second time.

In February 2016, he was taking part in a Brighton and Hove Albion charity event at Horsham when he suddenly fell ill.

On that occaison, bystanders used a defibrillator from a parade of shops and also carried out CPR on Mr Brackley’s heart while waiting for ambulance crews to arrive.

He is now at home recovering – and praising his personal defibrillator – after suffering another cardiac “event” while performing at a football supporters’ night on Thursday.

Peter, 66, suddenly lost his balance and fell over just a few minutes into a short speech at a function at The Castle in Worthing.

His personal mini defibrillator, which he wears above his heart, was put in place after his first scare. It kicked in straight away to correct his heart rhythm and he quickly regained consciousness.

Peter, who was appearing with ex-Albion legends Gordon Smith and Guy Butters, along with Albion president Dick Knight, spent the night in Worthing Hospital for observation before being sent home the following day.

He said: “It was obviously another traumatic experience but the good news is that my defibrillator did what it is supposed to do and by the time the paramedics arrived at the venue, I was actually already sitting up and chatting.

“What a wonderful piece of life-saving equipment.

“As well as the paramedics, I would also like to say a special thanks to audience member Gary Stepney, who helped me recover before they got there.

“I am feeling fine at the moment, and just relaxing at home, but definitely won’t be doing any more live performing. I’ve been giving speeches and appearing on stage for many decades now, and it’s time to take a back seat.”

The commentator, who lives in Angmering, is best known for covering Football Italia on Channel 4 in the 1990s and formerly commentating for the computer game series Pro Evolution Soccer, and for Michael Owen’s World League Soccer ‘99.

He has also been a familiar voice on BBC, ITV and Sky and worked at major competitions including the World Cup, European championships and the FA Cup.

He writes a popular column in The Argus sports pages every Thursday – and has vowed to carry on without missing a week. This week he will write about his drama.

He is a lifelong Brighton and Hove Albion fan and a supporter of the club charity Albion In The Community.

Back in 2016, Mr Brackley was appearing at a fundraising event at the Holbrook Club in Horsham for Albion In The Community.

North West Sussex Seagulls, a Horsham-based supporters club, had hosted the night for AITC and later decided to make a donation to fund a defibrillator for the venue. AITC also donated the proceeds from the event to help pay for the life-saving equipment. Grateful Peter returned to the Holbrook Club to hand over the defibrillator.

He admitted he had “virtually no recollection” what had happened.
