After the opening there was an explosive ‘boom in the room’ performance by chemistry tutor John Luton and assistant Madeleine Buck.

The lab was blessed with a ‘Whoosh Bottle’ explosion of alcohol and air being ignited and combusting in a large polycarbonate bottle and two ‘Ethanol Rockets’ being fired across the room.

The lab will serve biology and chemistry A Level students as well as those studying GCSE Science.

Brian Marriott, assistant head of School for Science said, “We are really proud to have had Caroline Lucas open our new lab today. Recently we have had a large increase in student numbers and this lab will help meet that demand. Here at Varndean College we are dedicated to producing scientists of the future and these new facilities will enable us to do that.”
