England batsman Dawid Malan has succeeded James Franklin as Middlesex club captain.

Malan, who has featured in 10 Tests and one Twenty20 international, made his professional debut for the county in 2006 and has gone on to amass more than 14,000 runs in nearly 350 appearances across all formats.

He was appointed T20 captain in 2016 but will now take charge of the team in all three forms, capping a remarkable past few months for the left-handed batsman, who was England’s leading run-scorer in the Ashes and one of their few bright spots in a chastening 4-0 series defeat this winter.

With one eye on his potential unavailability for spells this summer, Middlesex have also named opening batsman Sam Robson as the four-day vice-captain, with former New Zealand all-rounder Franklin sliding back into the ranks.

Middlesex managing director of cricket Angus Fraser said: “Dawid has always held the desire to captain teams and we have for some time believed he has had the potential to captain the club, hence his appointment as T20 captain in 2016.

“Along with the belief I have that he will become an excellent leader, Dawid stands out because he is somebody who we believe will do the job for several years.

“England commitments – and I hope Dawid continues to thrive as an international cricketer – may mean we do not see him for periods of the season but, in my mind, that should not stop the right man from holding the position he deserves to hold. In light of this Middlesex Cricket have made Sam Robson vice-captain in County Championship cricket.”

Malan accrued 951 runs in Middlesex’s County Championship winning campaign in 2016, including a crucial century in their title decider against Yorkshire, but England commitments meant he only featured eight times as his county were relegated last year.

He said: “I am honoured to have been asked to captain Middlesex, following in the footsteps of many great players and captains.

“As a squad, we are looking forward to the new season, determined to win back our position in Division One of the championship and to compete strongly in both one-day competitions.”
