A MOTHER who put her life on hold to care for her husband after a heart attack left him mentally and physically disabled has received an award for her extraordinary work.

Sabrina Mason, 29, from Brighton, won the title of Carer of the Year at The Argus Community Stars awards.

Unfortunately Sabrina was in a lot of pain herself on the day of the event and was unable to attend to collect her award, but on receiving it yesterday said she was “overwhelmed” at being voted the winner.

Sabrina’s husband, Daniel Mason, 44 was left paralysed, blind and had serious cognitive problems following a heart attack at his home in September 2015.

Daniel, who was always active and healthy beforehand, was put into an induced coma for three weeks, then spent the next six months in intensive care.

Daniel is now living in a rehabilitation care home in Putney with facilities such as physio care, a gym and hydrotherapy. Sabrina said he was in the best possible place for his condition.

Incredibly and after years of hard work Daniel has managed to recover a lot of his cognitive ability but on a bad day still becomes confused and depressed.

He is becoming more aware of what has happened to him and the long-term effects.

Sabrina said: “Sometimes it seems that Daniel takes one step forward and then several steps back, when he suffers with infections and seizures.”

The mother of two is now juggling paying for their mortgage, taking care of their girls and helping with Daniel’s lengthy rehabilitation.

She has just been made redundant from her employment after more than ten years of service, which has made her feel very uncertain and anxious at how she is going to cope.

Sabrina said Dan might never be able to walk or physically see his children again.

The family have launched a crowdfunder to help pay for the extraordinary costs of Dan’s treatment and to help provide a normal life.
