WHEN Liz Gold pulls on her trainers for the Brighton Half Marathon tomorrow she will be thinking about her brother.

As she pounds the 13-mile course she knows he will be running along side her even though he died from a heroin overdose in June.

Argus sales rep Liz, 40, said: “I have never done anything like this before. I couldn’t even run around the block.

“But when I’m running I feel like he’s really running with me.

“I will be running and I’ll start to think of him and will start crying.

“I’ll be running along the seafront with tears streaming down my face.”

Simon, 40, had been a recovering heroin addict for many years.

He had been in Preston and planning to come home to his family in Hove in June when he was found dead from an overdose having relapsed. His packed suitcase was beside him.

Father-of-three Simon left behind a devastated family.

His family described him as a cheeky little boy from the age of about four.

By the time he was 20 he was injecting heroin every day.

He managed to get clean several times but relapsed just as many.

Liz said: “Everyone is devastated. His kids Alfie, Evie-Mai and Millie are devastated and heartbroken. We are such a close family.

“I just wanted to do something to raise awareness about drug addiction and what it can do.

“You see so many drugs in Brighton at the moment but when something like this happens to someone close to you, you see the real impact.

“He had been doing so well, I don’t think he intended to die. People with addiction think they can control it but they can’t. It controls them.”

Liz has been sponsored by Buddies, CityCabs and the Ancient Mariner.
