CHRIS HUGHTON says Albion are in it to win it as they aim to upset Manchester United in the FA Cup.

The Seagulls go to Old Trafford in the quarter-finals tomorrow night, where Portsmouth pulled off a surprise 1-0 victory at the same stage a decade ago on their way to lifting the trophy.

Boss Hughton said: “That’s the reason why we’re playing in this competition and there will be upsets and there will be teams that have poor days and teams that have very good.

“We will have to have a very good day and United not such a good day to get anything from the game. That’s why we’re here and that’s why we’ve got to this stage.

“It’s by no fluke or coincidence that we’ve got to this stage of the competition and once we’re here, we want to give it our best shot.”

Premier League survival remains the overriding priority for Albion, but with 5,000 supporters making the journey north and a Wembley semi-final at stake, Hughton only has eyes for the FA Cup this weekend.

He said: “The only thing that would be more favourable would be a quarter-final tie against Manchester United at the Amex.

“But it’s right up there and there isn’t one player that won’t want to play or one supporter that won’t be looking forward to the game.

“These are the moments you work for, in what has been a good but tough season for us. The likes of us don’t generally get to quarter-finals and semi-finals, and you have to give it all you’ve got.”

Hughton is aware of the danger of a backlash from Jose Mourinho’s United following their sombre second leg defeat and exit from the Champions League last 16 at home to Sevilla on Wednesday.

He said: “I did see their last game, but the game before that they were very good and beat a Liverpool team that are playing as well as any team in the country at the moment.

“What we all know about Manchester United is they have huge quality, they are second in this division and only because Manchester City are having an outstanding season. They are going to have days that are not so good and we’ll have to make sure that we play well enough.”
