1. From the Cuckoo Trail car park, go back to the entrance and cross the road at the traffic island to go along Western Road opposite. If traffic is very busy, there is a zebra crossing a little way to the left. If arriving by bus, from Tesco in North Street, walk back over the bridge or from Police Station in George Street, walk on over the bridge; then turn right along Western Road.Go by Hailsham Free Church and alongside the recreation ground on the left. At a junction where the main road bears right, continue direction along Western Road.

2. In about 450 yards, a short distance past Hamelsham Court, turn right along a twitten for about 100 yards, ignoring another footpath on the left. On coming to a vehicle barrier, cross Woodpecker Drive and go along Tilehurst Drive almost opposite. At the junction with Forest View, turn right for a few paces, then turn left along a twitten by a footpath sign. On coming to an estate road, continue direction to the junction with Grovelands Road and turn left. At the end, turn left by a Grovelands Orchard Park sign, through a gap by a field-gate, and along a path to enter this small secluded area of parkland.

3. Return by the same path, but just before reaching Grovelands Road, turn left along a footpath. On coming to a road junction, continue direction along Gleneagles Drive for less than 100 yards, then turn left into Hailsham Country Park to the left of a small car parking area and follow the left-hand path downhill. Hailsham Country Park, formerly part of Grovelands Farm, has been owned and maintained by the Town Council since 1992 and covers approximately 22 acres. [If desiring to explore a little farther, go across the open field area on the right to find two small ponds and woodland. At the lower end, bear left between a wild flower meadow and a strip of woodland parallel with the main road. On coming to the elongated lake, there is an information board with details of all parts of the Country Park. A path circumnavigates the pond but it is advisable to follow the left-hand side to keep away from traffic noise.

4. Near the farther end, go through a gap in the hedge on the left and cross the bottom end of Gleneagles Drive. Turn right to go by Chandlers car showroom and, at the roundabout, bear left along Diplocks Way industrial estate. Although this is not the most attractive part of the walk, there is Diplocks Cafe (open seven days a week) about 400 yards along on the right if refreshment is needed at this point. At the end of the road, turn right along South Road (A295).

5. Cross the road at the traffic island by KFC and continue direction for a short distance until opposite Burfield Park Industrial Estate, named after Thomas Burfield who opened a string and twine making factory in 1807, for which Hailsham became famous. Turn left along a twitten and cross Ersham Road (B2104) to go along a driveway, passing to the left of iron gates and along another twitten. Cross a road to go along Nursery Path opposite, ignoring another footpath on the right, to cross yet another road. Continue direction to pass by a cycle barrier and cross Station Road to Common Pond opposite.

6. It is a delightful walk to circumnavigate the pond; there are plenty of seats and a sheltered corner on the farther side. Common Pond has been a focal point in Hailsham for
