ADULT day care centres are facing an uncertain future as council cuts bite.

The much-loved Warwick House facility in Seaford is one of five that could be closed as East Sussex County Council looks to save £59,000 from its countywide adult social care budget.

Shocked clients were told in a behind-closed-doors meeting on Thursday that the service in Warwick Road would be placed under review, starting today.

A ten-week equality impact assessment and consultation ending on May 28 will help decide the fate of the centre, which offers food and social opportunities to vulnerable adults – some of who are disabled.

Delia Corley, from Kingsley Road, Brighton, said her 88-year-old mother Hilda depends on the centre at weekends.

She said: “My mother lives with dementia and she is frail.

“She has been going there for nearly six years.

“We were not told of the consultation – we just found out about it by fluke.

“This is just wrong, it doesn’t cost the county council a lot of money to run the centre.

“These are people, not cattle.

“It will be hell for my mother if they shut it.  “People living with dementia need to have a quiet environment and they are used to routine.

“The centre is a life line for her. We have not heard from the county council offering other services for the elderly to replace the centre if it goes.

“The county council argue that not many people use the centre, but my argument is if they don’t have enough residents using it then why don’t they spend a bit of money to promote it?”

But a council spokesman said: “The review of services has now been extended to include the day service at Warwick House, as well as three other day services we commission and fund.

“Our priority is to inform clients, carers and staff.

“As the county council does not directly provide the other three day services, we have recently agreed with the service provider that clients and carers will be informed.”
