Craig Turton's letter (Letters, August 1) reveals just how panicky he is that the Conservatives are holding their own on green issues.

Coun Turton does not want us talking and acting green, for fear of our exposing Labour's record: the phoney energy review that undermined renewables and the jet-setting prime minister who could easily have conducted his gas-guzzling farewell tour by email.

To read Coun Turton's letter, you would think there are no parking problems in Brighton and Hove. Is there a single resident or visitor who agrees with him? The councillor and his colleagues clearly fail to understand that much pollution is created by cars unable to park. Rather than ignore the problem they know increases pollution, the council's environment team is thinking creatively about finding a solution.

I advise Coun Turton to visit Bruges. There - if he looks hard - he will find a barely noticeable underground car park bigger than any in Brighton and Hove. He will also find a town centre virtually bereft of cars but with astonishingly high cycling levels.

Is the councillor also aware that Labour-led councils in Edinburgh, Chester and Bristol have all viewed underground car parks as a solution to unclogging roads? Does he know his Labour colleagues authorised an underground car park at Brighton University in 2002?

And was it not a transport spokesperson named Craig Turton who threatened to destroy allotments at Patcham Court Farm with his own car parking proposals?

Labour need to learn it is better to debate with facts than ideology.
