Although Brighton does not have a sandy beach like the ones in the Mediterranean, it is one of the most visited places in Europe.

Brighton seafront has claimed second place for the most Instagrammed beach in Europe. Our popular seaside town has won the hearts of many travellers who enjoy the arcades, ice cream and fish and chips and sunbathing in the summer.

The number one spot has been handed to Potisano, Italy.

The results were compiled by Globalhunters which looked at the 60 most hashtagged beaches on the continent. Brighton residents and politicians were delighted to hear the news.

Councillor Alan Robins, chairman of the Brighton and Hove City Council’s tourism, development and culture committee, said: “It’s just fantastic. It shows how well Brighton is regarded and I couldn’t be happier.

Businesses at the pier have worked really hard to make it a wonderful place. Brighton has always been number one in my eyes.”

Conservative councillor Robert Nemeth, of Wish ward, said: “It’s no surprise that our city appears so high on the list. We have a lot of things that are worth photographing after all.

“Whether it be the seafront or Downs, Palace Pier or West Pier, The Lanes or North Laine, Royal Pavilion or Grand Hotel, we have the landmarks that people want to see. The city’s looks are of the utmost importance and one that shouldn’t be forgotten in the context of our tourism industry.”

Anne Ackord, chief executive of the Brighton Palace Pier Group, said: “Brighton is such a rich and vibrant place, full of great things to do. There’s a reason people call it London by the sea. It has an energy that you get nowhere else. It’s a city with a great seaside presence, of which Brighton Palace Pier is at the pinnacle.”
