AN ALBION star took time out from his busy training regime to help inspire people with a range of disabilities to play football.

Midfielder Solly March took part in the Premier League BT Disability Initiative session with the Albion in the Community charity at the club’s training ground in Lancing on Tuesday, where he had a kick about with disabled people of all ages.

The holiday soccer school is part of a programme run by the club’s charity, which offers 31 different football sessions for disabled people across Sussex, providing an inclusive environment and encouraging them to improve their skills and socialise.

Speaking to The Argus at the event, March said: “I got involved and set up some shots and volleys for some of the young boys.

“I have been over before for things like this.

“Seeing these kids enjoy themselves is what it is all about.

“Children that support Brighton want to be playing football and be associated with the Brighton badge and this is what the programme gives them a chance to do.

“They all have various disabilities but are enjoying themselves and smiling.”

Nine-year-old Chase Wells, from Bexhill, who has cerebral palsy, attends regular sessions for junior players with the condition or who require a frame, along with other disabled youngsters.

His mother Candice Wells, 33, said: “We were told he may never walk when he was 18-months-old.

“He started coming to sessions with a walking frame and is now able to walk without a frame. He is a huge Brighton fan and it is a dream come true for him.”

Lead coach Phil Broom, Albion’s disability development officer, said each player has their own story and it is important to teach them that “every player counts”.

Commenting on playing for Albion and his marriage to his partner Amelia Goldman, March said: “Playing in the Premier League has been a massive learning curve but I am enjoying it as well and just want to keep pushing on. I am getting married in Dubai in the summer.

“You have to have focuses away from the game and just getting your head away from the game helps.”
