A POPULAR mayor is pictured in Timeout today.

Councillor Hilary Somerville became the mayor of Brighton in 1977, the Queen’s Silver Jubilee year.

She opened the Brighton Centre and Jubilee Court during that year.

She lived in Kemp Town for 61 years before emigrating to New Zealand to be close to her two sons David and Peter and daughter Sue.

She died in 2016 at the age of 91.

Talking about Councillor Somerville for her obituary, Carol Theobald, a current Brighton and Hove city councillor and friend described her as friendly and well-liked.

Also pictured today is Linda Nolan, of Nolan Sisters fame, who launched her solo career in 1984.

She starred in many pantomimes around the country, and performed at The Hawth in Crawley in 1988.

She is pictured here posing with Stu Francis.

Another photo shows her in her Cinderella costume with ugly sisters Barry Daniels and Les Wilson.

Linda, who has performed in many more pantomimes over the years, was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in 2017.

We have pictures of another Somerville – Norma –pictured here leading the Goose Fair in Burgess Hill.

She appeared in the club’s first Mother Goose as Priscilla The Golden Goose in 1968.

Norma watched her granddaughter, Amy Somerville, play Fairy Fortuna in the 2015 production of Mother Goose in Burgess Hill, as history repeated itself.

The club started putting on pantomimes in 1966, and they are still going strong today.

Norma also played Mrs Crusoe in their production of Robinson Crusoe in 1967.
