A CONCERT inspired by the death of a young girl from cancer is taking place in Hove tomorrow night.

The original Butterfly Concert was performed at Bishop Hannington Church, Hove, by nine-year-old Kate Cooper and her mother Stephanie Cant in April 1991.

Kate died three months later.

She had been diagnosed aged six but continued to play.

Kate designed the butterfly motif for the original concert and played the cello, piano and guitar.

She even composed her own “Piece for Violin and Cello”.

Now internationally famous Danish musicians Michala Petri (recorders) and Lars Hannibal (guitar) are coming to give a rare concert.

The Butterfly Concert is arranged by composer Stephanie who lives in West Hove.

This inspiring pair will perform a varied and exciting programme of music spanning four centuries.

Michala is recognised as one of the world’s leading performers on the recorder, and has worked with many leading conductors and composers, winning numerous awards and making more than 70 recordings.

Since the partnership with Lars Hannibal started in 1992, they have given numerous concerts and establishing a remarkable mutual musical understanding.

They are in huge demand on the world stage and we are privileged by their presence here.

Mum Stephanie said: “These concerts are now really inspired by Kate rather than specifically in memory of her.

“Kate thought music was for everyone and during her short life did a great deal to encourage other people to play and listen to music.

“So I want to continue concerts at Bishop Hannington to contribute high level classical music to the Hove community, especially for the young and the old who cannot travel a long way in the evenings to hear music in other places.

“Kate had been hugely inspired to practice the recorder after hearing Michala perform in 1988 and the pair briefly met, with mutual pleasure, in 1990

“Thanks to Kate, we now turn a circle with Michala coming to Bishop Hannington Church to play where Kate did.”

Light refreshments will be available in the interval tomorrow evening and the estimated finishing time is 9.00pm.

Tickets cost £17 for adults, £8 for children and students in advance.

On the door adults pay £20 and £10 for children and students in advance.
