THE happy couple who got engaged during the Brighton Marathon are looking forward to planning their wedding.

Rob Setters, 29, got down on one knee and proposed to his new fiancée Katie Dowling, 27, at the finishing line on Brighton seafront.

Rob said: “Katie was dropping hints for a while that I should do it at the Marathon, but she did not really expect me to.

“She was completely shocked.

“I was following her around using an app, so I knew where she was.

“In the lead up to the big moment I was really nervous.

“I had to get past a security guard and a marshal on the way to the finish line.

“Once I said I was proposing to my girlfriend, they let me through.

“The media team ushered me through and they videoed the whole thing.

“I would really like to get their footage.”

“Katie loves big, romantic gestures and all her family were all there, so it was perfect.”

The couple both studied physiotherapy at the University of Brighton at different times.

They met in Redhill where they both worked, and have been together for six years.

They now live and work as physiotherapists in Wimbledon.

They are potentially looking to tie the knot this winter.

Rob said: “Since Sunday we have not made any concrete plans.

“Katie has just been showing off the ring.

“But we are keen to get the ball rolling as soon as possible.

“My dad is unwell with motor neurone disease and we would like him to be able to enjoy our big day.

“He is using a wheelchair at the moment and can still stand and walk a bit but we are not sure how much longer he will be able to.

“We would like to maybe get married in the winter but we have not booked anything yet.”

Katie has raised more than £2,100 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).

She made the same amount for Spinal Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland.

Originally Katie is from County Laois in Ireland, where the couple are planning to get married.

They are going there in July to look at venues.

Rob ran the Marathon four years ago, completing it in four and a half hours.

Katie was hoping to beat his time, but was disappointed when she came in at five hours and 20 minutes.

“At least there was some good news for her at the end,” said Rob.
