I say good luck to the residents of Surrenden Road and the surrounding areas when they get the resident parking zone for their area.

It will seem nice to park outside your house for the first few weeks.

But as more residents of the 26 surrounding roads buy theirs, they will find they can’t park outside their houses.

If one house has two vehicles registered to that house they get a permit each, and each person can purchase a book of visitors vouchers, so all these people can park legally outside your house.

Plus any van or small LGV with a traders permit (from any zone) can also park legally outside your house, and to obtain a permit for any zone including yours, you must declare that you have no off street parking facility (driveway/ garage) at your premises.

I know these facts because I live in Kemp Town, and I had the same problem as you have in the Surrenden Road area, coming home from work with nowhere to park near my house.

I had to park on the industrial estate, so I brought a folding bike to get to and fro from my vehicle.

We were offered a residential parking scheme, an extension of the existing zone, (C Zone ) so we all went for it.

Not only do the residents of the street park here now (but not outside their houses), but the people in the high rise flats around Hereford Street do as well, as our resident parking permits are cheaper than the flats’ car park.

So it’s not as rosy as its made to look.
