Brighton and Hove has a deserved reputation as a top tourist destination which is also loved by those who live here.

Of course no city or town is without its problems, but first impressions count.

There are myriad attractions but at some point in the day most of us need to pay a visit to a public loo.

Sadly, however, the days of an attendant on site and a bowl of pot-pourri above the sink are but a distant memory unless you are in a position to nip undetected into the nearest posh hotel.

In Monday’s Argus, we reported on the poor state of the toilets in Pavilion Gardens, which led to further complaints about the state of the toilets at Hove Lawns.

This a shame because it reflects badly on the city and we can only hope that any problems will be rectified as soon as possible when they are highlighted by the public.

The council, to be fair, has said it will act as swiftly as possible if any concerns are reported on its website or to its contractor, Healthmatic.

That is all well and good in theory but needs to work in practice.

Reports of used sanitary products not being properly disposed of, a lack of toilet paper and broken locks on cubicles have to be tackled.

Vandalism is also sadly prevalent as is graffiti. If perpetrators are caught then they should face the full force of the law to deter others.

Brightonians are rightly proud of their city but it would be a major bonus if we had public toilets were up to scratch too.

Therefore, report any that aren’t and let’s demand action to get them spick and span once more.
