BRIGHTON Housing Trust’s Greater Brighton Cycle Challenge is taking place on Sunday, July 1, at Preston Park Velodrome.

The event, which begins at 7am, is principally being held to raise money for BHT’s day centre for homeless people First Base but participants can choose to attract sponsorship donations for any charity of their choice.

The ride registration fee will go to First Base.

BHT has teamed up with The Living Coast, Brighton and Lewes Downs Unesco World Biosphere Region, to create the challenge comprising three cycling experiences allowing for all levels of fitness.

Cyclists can take part in the Around The World challenge with the aim to collectively ride the distance around the world, 40,075km, in 12 hours.

Family entertainment will take place and designated slots will be run for families and cycle clubs.

Alternatively, cyclists can enjoy the beauty of the biosphere region by cycling a 30 or 58-mile route along the coast and out to the South Downs, starting and finishing at the velodrome.

Andy Winter, chief executive of BHT said: “We are extremely excited about running an even bigger and more exciting event this year.

“We were overwhelmed by the support of more th 350 people on the day.

“Over £15,000 was raised to help people to move away from the streets and live independent and healthy lives.

“This year we have teamed up with The Living Coast to help connect the community to the beautiful Unesco-designated World Biosphere Region, within the Greater Brighton area.

”We are also looking for family-friendly entertainment to add to our entertainment programme, volunteers to help run the day, and outdoor caterers.”
