They came, they saw and they conquered.

More than £37,000 was raised for Rockinghorse, which raises funds for the Trevor Mann Baby Unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, thanks to a group of adventurers having the courage to abseil down the i360 on Brighton seafront.

That is a remarkable sum raised by those who took part and no doubt more will pour into the coffers now that each individual has completed the abseil.

Twenty nine people, including boxer Chris Eubank Jr and Argus reporter Joel Adams, took on the challenge to raise much-needed funds for the charity.

Chris, who confessed to being an “adrenaline junkie” said he wasn’t even remotely nervous.

Others didn’t seem quite so confident.

From the ground it looks a hell of a long way up, but that did not deter 29 people, including two 14-year-olds and an 85-year-old grandmother from taking it on.

Many looked mightily relieved to have their feet back on the ground with some vowing they would never do it again, but they can take great pride in what they achieved.

However, their cause was a united one, which was to raise as much money as possible for the baby unit, with some of those taking part having personal, touching stories to tell about why they were so passionate about raising money by taking on the daunting challenge.

All credit must go to all of those who took part and to the i360 for hosting the event.

The applause that greeted the descent of all 29 of those who took part was certainly thoroughly deserved.
