Two women and their van are waging war on waste.

Charlotte Cross and Thalassa de Rementeria have started their own eco-friendly shop called Charlotte’s Cupboard.

They sell food and cleaning items from their electric van, which they have affectionately named Peggy.

Now Peggy will be parking outside two Brighton businesses on regular weekends.

Thalassa, who lives in Hove, said: “We founded the company to give people an easy and convenient way to reduce their plastic use.

“Charlotte and I lead plastic-free lives and we wanted to show our customers how they do this too.

“We also want to change the way the supply chain works and we reject any supplier that cannot provide products in cardboard or recyclable plastic.

“We speak to local councils in Sussex to see how we can help communities produce less waste.”

Their product range includes packaging-free baking products, beans and pulses, chocolate, dried fruit, tea and coffee and they are always adding more.

They also sell fabric conditioner in bottles, which they later send back to their supplier, and shampoo bars.

Last month the company parked Peggy the van outside the Four Candles gift shop in Victoria Street, Brighton, for the day to trial it as a permanent location.

They will now be selling their groceries at the Florence Road market near Fiveways on the second Saturday of every month and outside Four Candles on the third Saturday of every month.

Customers are invited to take their own containers from home and fill them up with the quantity of goods they need, whether that is a tablespoon or a kilo.

Charlotte’s Cupboard will be launching free home deliveries in Brighton and Hove in the next few weeks.

The women already offer free delivery in Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, Hassocks, Ditchling and Hurstpierpoint.

Thalassa said: “Our customers have said they remember when people used to shop in this way before we started using so much single-use plastic. Some of them have offered to drive delivery vans to help us grow.”
