A cyclist has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car. 

A Ford Focus collided with the cyclist around 7.13am this morning (May 9) in George V Avenue, Worthing, near the junction with Trent Road. 

The cyclist, believed to be a 20-year-old local man, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with serious injuries.

When The Argus visited the scene the Ford Focus could be seen stationary in the road with a smashed window screen next to a BMX bike.

Police cordoned off the road with police tape until 10.45am while emergency services were on the scene.

The car driver, a 27-year-old man, of no fixed address, has been arrested on suspicion of driving without due care and attention and driving without insurance, and remains in police custody at this stage.
