He was the city’s mayor three times.

Sir John Cordy Burrows was born in 1813 and died in 1876.

He was elected mayor of Brighton in 1857 and again the following year.

He served as mayor again in 1871.

In 1873, he was knighted by Queen Victoria at Osborne.

A statue of him was erected in the grounds of the Royal Pavilion and was unveiled on 14 February 187.

It was moved to the south end of Old Steine in 1984, and granted Grade II listing status in 1999.

This photo is dated 1983, presumably when the statue was being prepared to be moved.

Councillor Pat Hawkes and the mayor of Dieppe, a Canadian city, whose name was Irenee Bourjons, are pictured here in Brighton in 1989.

Cllr Hawkes won her seat in Hollingdean and Stanmer in a by-election and served for nearly 30 years until she stepped down in 2009.

Also photographed here is Brian Fitch, who was elected to hold the mayor of Brighton post in 1989 and then again in 2014, after 40 years of service.

He is at Bevendean Children’s Centre holding a cheque with a group of women.

Various other mayors and mayoresses of Hove and Brighton are photographed here in the 60s and 70s, including Jim Buttimer, mayor of Hove in 1988, who is thanking the Amex senior executive John Lenton in front of the first ‘Heritage of Hove’ board.
