SAY hello to our new Duke and Duchess.

Prince Harry was given the dukedom of Sussex this morning ahead of his marriage to American actress Meghan Markle.

The Queen gave her grandson the title, which meant Ms Markle would automatically become the Duchess when she said yes after walking down the aisle at Windsor Castle this afternoon.

A Buckingham Palace statement said: “The Queen has today been pleased to confer a Dukedom on Prince Henry of Wales.

“His titles will be Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.

“Prince Harry thus becomes His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, and Ms Meghan Markle on marriage will become Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.”

Harry becomes only the second man to hold the title of Duke of Sussex.

The position, which is the highest rank in the British peerage, was last held by Prince Augustus Frederick in 1801.

Harry, 33, and 36-year-old Ms Markle’s new titles will likely mean they form close ties with the county, with royal visits a possibility.

His elder brother, Prince William, holds the dukedom of Cambridge.

Since he wed Kate Middleton, the couple have made several official visits to the city, and have ties with organisations there.

Harry met his wife on a blind date in 2016.

Since then, they have become one of the most revered couples in the country.

Ms Markle has been married before.

She was previously with film producer Trevor Engelson, taking his hand in marriage in 2011.

But the couple divorced less than two years later.

This is the first marriage between a senior British royal and an American divorcee in 82 years.

The last time it happened, Prince Harry's great-great uncle, King Edward VIII, wed abdicated over his love for Wallis Simpson in 1936, sparking controversy in the monarchy.

The news of Harry and Ms Markle taking the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex was met with joy by royal lovers.

Monarchist Julia McCarthy-Fox, from Horsham, had camped at Windsor Great Park overnight on Friday, and was unaware the couple had been crowned Duke and Duchess of Sussex until she got a phone call from The Argus.

Mrs McCarthy-Fox said: “I was hoping it would happen as there were rumours about Harry becoming Duke for years.

“I’m really glad about it. It might mean we get a royal visit.

“I just think it is rather nice they are reviving some of these old titles.”

Mrs McCarthy-Fox was one of the thousands gathered in Windsor, waiting eagerly to catch a glimpse of the red-haired Prince and Suits actress Ms Markle.

Street parties haven taken place in the sunshine in Brighton and Hove today, with a big screen showing of the wedding ceremony taking place next to the i360.

Like down here, the weather was beautiful in Windsor, and the atmosphere was rocking.

"The day has been lovely," said Mrs McCarthy-Fox.

"The atmosphere is brilliant."

The happy couple may also be paying a royal visit to Brighton soon.

The Royal Pavilion has invited Prince Harry and his lady to its grounds, with a formal invitation to be sent to them in the coming weeks.

Councillor Alan Robins, chairman of Brighton and Hove City Council’s economic development and culture committee, said: “We are thrilled to have Harry and Meghan as the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

“As Brighton and Hove is one of the largest cities in Sussex, we hope they visit as soon as they can.

“We think a visit to the Royal Pavilion would be the perfect start to getting to know the area.

“It is beautiful, lavish and fascinating and a perfect place for a romantic visit.”

Harry also received Scottish and Northern Irish titles from Her Majesty.

Our Duke is also now the Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel, with Ms Markle the Countess of Dumbarton and Baroness Kilkeel.
