A BEACH was cordoned off and bomb squads on site after an explosive device was found.

It was discovered in water off Elmer beach, near Bognor Regis, on Saturday morning.

The large metal object, about 6ft long, was in the water below the high water mark.

It was a German World War II sea mine, estimated to weigh around 1000 kilos.

Work to make the device safe was carried out.

No evacuations were necessary.

Police were working to ensure that the public remains safe.

Resident David Maw, who lives in Middleton on sea, said at 5.30pm today he heard a loud thud.
