THERE was no commuter chaos in Brighton today - despite more than half the morning trains running late.

An additional 400 trains are now on the schedule across Govia Thameslink Railway lines, with extra services running from Brighton to London.

There was havoc across the country yesterday, with dozens of the additional lines being cancelled.

Govia Thameslink Railway changed their entire schedules for all their operators – but, so far, it has worked, according to London-bound Brightonians.

Solicitor Mark Dyson has been late for his 9am starts for as long as he can remember because of delays, but that could be set to change.

He said: "If they are actually going to run as they are being advertised to, then it's going to be a hell of a lot better for me.

"Before I was late every day. Only by ten minutes, but I shouldn't have been.

"Now I can get there for about 8.30am, and I have a choice of three trains to get.

"It seems someone has applied some common sense."

Govia said there are now 12 trains running from Brighton to London Victoria in the "morning rush", compared to ten before.

Thameslink services to Blackfriars, St Pancras and Bedford that bypass London Bridge will now stop at the new station there, giving Brighton commuters five more direct trains to the capital. Govia said three more services are to be added in December.

Of the commuters we spoke to, the only ones who were affected by the changes were the people who forgot to check the new times.

Alex Lewis, a research manager who lives in Seven Dials, Brighton, travels to London Victoria for work – and the changes work for her.

She said: "I'm looking forward to it – it's much better for me. I used to get the 8.15am, now it's the 8.14am, but it gets me there faster, which gives me more flexibility with work."

Despite commuters' joy, by 10.30am today, more than half of the trains coming in and out of Brighton's mainline were either late or cancelled.

Thirty two per cent of trains had been more than 30 minutes late or cancelled, according to public performance measure statistics.

A further 20 per cent were between five and 30 minutes late, with the remaining 48 per cent running on time or delayed by less than five minutes.
