PLAYWRIGHTS and actors are the theme of today’s Timeout.

These photos span the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s

Actor Roy Dotrice is pictured here in character in 1973.

He played John Aubrey in Brief Lives, a one-man play which he opened at the Hampstead Theatre Club in 1967.

The play later moved to Broadway and back to London in 1969 to the Criterion Theatre.

He played 400 shows there, but in all he appeared in 1,782 performances of the show around the world, including at the Theatre Royal in Brighton, breaking a world record.

The costumes and makeup he wore to play Fagin in Oliver! and John Aubrey in Brief Lives were quite similar.

Also pictured here is Frank Finlay on Brighton’s Palace Pier in 1992.

Frank was a stage, film and television actor.

He lived in Brighton for many years including in Kemp Town, with the Finlay Bar named after him.

He is also pictured here unveiling a plaque to commemorate Lord Olivier at his Brighton home in 1990.

Leigh Dilley, the actor best known for The Eagle Has Landed in 1976, is pictured here on Brighton beach in 1977.

Playwright and screenwriter William Dinner is pictured in 1986.

He wrote The Obsessed, a murder mystery play which was later made into a film in 1951.

He was born in 1906 in Bournemouth and died in 1997 in Sussex.
