AN LGBT football supporters’ group has now been officially launched.

Proud Seagulls held its first meeting at the Latest Music Bar in Manchester Street in Brighton on Thursday.

Organiser Stuart Matthews was joined by former Hove MP Ivor Caplin and other guests to launch the fans group at Brighton and Hove Albion.

It follows the creation of groups at other Premier League football clubs and is linked to Brighton and Hove Pride.

Mr Matthews, the founder member, said the group will aim to challenge homophobic and transphobic abuse in the stands and in society as well.

He said: “I had the idea of setting up an LGBT fan group a few years ago. Then with promotion to the Premier League, I felt it was the right time, as most clubs in the league have their own LGBT groups.

“So why should we be any different? Over the years we as a club have suffered more homophobic and transphobic chants from opposing fans than any other supporters.

“This is something we intend to tackle in order to reduce and ultimately eradicate homophobia, transphobia, racism and sexism from football and from society as a whole.”

The initiative has been supported by Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club, and former Hove MP Ivor Caplin.

Mr Caplin said: “We cannot ever stand still on LGBT rights. We have to move forward and get homophobia removed from our football stadiums.

“So I’m really pleased to have supported the launch of Proud Seagulls.”
