ANGELA Pemberton is just a normal parent living in Brighton.

But today she makes our front page.

That’s because she has started a petition to save staff at her son’s school from losing their jobs.

Moulsecoomb Primary School faces many challenges.

It is in a very challenging part of our city and its last Ofsted inspection, in March 2017, judged that it requires improvement.

But only last month we reported that 11 staff at the primary school were at risk of compulsory redundancy.

And the reason?

Cuts to funding.

Consultations between the school and Brighton and Hove City Council on the future of the staff have now drawn to a close with further meetings with the school and local education authority planned for this week.

The situation is simply unacceptable.

If the school has been managing its finances properly, which we must assume to be the case unless told otherwise, why is it being the subject of proposed cuts?

Why target schools in deprived areas of the city?

After all, it is the pupils who lose out, and here we are talking about their very futures.

The Argus salutes Angela.

Read what she has to say: “My son has high-functioning autism and relies heavily on the support staff.

“They are completely amazing people who have helped him with his learning and his SATs and helped him see his autism as a positive.”

Now let’s hope that the authorities listen to Angela and look elsewhere for savings. And preferably not in Moulsecoomb.
